Something not working, or a question the app does not answer? Email sam@getmaatje.app and you will get a reply from the person who wrote the app.
Point the camera at anything written in the language you are learning: a letter, a sign, a menu, a form. Maatje reads the text on your phone, picks out the words worth learning, and adds them to your list. You can also share text or a picture into Maatje from any other app.
If nothing is found, the photo may be too blurry or at too sharp an angle. Get the text roughly straight on and try again.
The coach is a live spoken conversation. It hears you and answers out loud, builds the lesson from the words you have captured, and writes you a recap afterwards in your own language.
Start with the free 5-minute level check. It tells you roughly which CEFR level you are at, and it costs nothing.
You need a working microphone and a reasonable connection. If the coach goes quiet mid-lesson it is usually the connection: leave and start again. A lesson that ends in the first 90 seconds is not counted against you.
Live lessons are counted, not unlimited. Maatje Speak includes 8 a month, Maatje Speak Plus includes 20. Unused lessons carry over for one month. If you run out early you can buy a pack of extra lessons, which never expire.
To cancel, open your Apple ID settings on your iPhone, tap Subscriptions, and cancel there. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period you already paid for. Refunds are handled by Apple.
Reinstalled the app and lost your subscription? Open the coach and tap Restore purchase.
Your photos, words and progress live on your phone. To erase everything, including your anonymous account on our side, use Settings → Delete my data. It cannot be undone.
The privacy policy spells out exactly what leaves your phone and who processes it.
